Frequently Asked Questions
How much should I budget for a Tanzanian safari?
Prices in Tanzania are quite low compared to most other countries. However, it’s important to remember that when traveling, you still need to budget costs accordingly so that you are not caught off-guard or short of money during your trip. We want you to have the best time possible and worrying about money shouldn’t be one of your memorable safari experiences! You should be able to sit back, relax, and enjoy an adventure of a lifetime!
Although most of our trips are designed to be all-inclusive (airfare not included), it is important to read up on all of our safaris options and talk with our experienced guides to plan an appropriate budget for your trip. Our Wild Root Safaris staff can help guide you to choose a safari experience that best fits your budget and needs. We recommend viewing our pre-packaged offerings first to see if there is something that peaks your interest.
We can also customize any trip to fit your particular budget and needs. Get in touch with us at info@wildrootsafaris.com to learn more about custom safari options.
Currency in Tanzania?
The currency used in Tanzania is called Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). We advise exchanging currency in your home country so that you can get the best rate possible. We also advise creating a daily budget for any additional food, alcohol, souvenirs, optional activities, travel, transportation, and any other personal expenses.
Although you may have access to ATMs in the larger cities, since you will be on safari, you will want to come prepared with appropriate amounts of cash. However, we do not recommend bringing large amounts of cash with you. Although Tanzania is a safe country, we do not want you to risk the chance of losing such funds during your trip, especially since most options can be prepaid and you should be focused on enjoying the great and vast outdoors!
What vaccinations do I need?
Before you leave on your trip, it is important to make sure you’ve been properly vaccinated. A doctor in your home country can help you decide which vaccinations you need to visit Tanzania. Some recommended vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (DTaP), and polio vaccines, however, it is best to consult a doctor to make sure that you have a proper evaluation on everything you need.
There is a risk of typhoid fever in some parts of Tanzania, so it is also advisable to get this vaccination. No one wants to contract typhoid while on vacation; it’s a miserable experience often with a high fever and headache. It is also recommended that you take anti-malarial medication before visiting parts of East Africa, including various areas of southern Tanzania.
COVID-19 restrictions in Tanzania
As pandemic restrictions start to lift, it is still important to remain aware of current travel guidance and vaccination/testing recommendations in Tanzania. Generally, international travel is starting to return to normal, but it is still important to check for updates on CIVID from Wild Root Safaris and the local government before traveling to Tanzania.
You may also check the website of Tanzania’s Department of Foreign Affairs for the most up-to-date information on COVID-19 restrictions and travel to Tanzania.
Accommodations in Tanzania
When it comes to Tanzania’s accommodations, there are a wide range of options to choose from. From sleeping under the stars to exclusive and ultra-luxurious safari lodges, there is really something for everyone.
There are often several accommodation levels within the national parks, ranging from basic accommodations with shared facilities to more expensive accommodations with more amenities. Tented accommodations are very popular during safari, particularly for those who wish to have a complete outdoor adventure experience. Tented camps are normally permanent structures and come complete with flushable toilets and hot showers. Most tented safari camps offer a full board (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and generally include soft drinks. Alcoholic drinks are typically charged separately.
It is also possible to camp during your trip, although you will need to bring your own tent and sleeping gear and all food supplies etc. Some items may also be available to rent locally. Speak with a Wild Root Safari guide to help you plan and coordinate a custom option, if it is something you are interested in.
If you are looking to step things up a notch, there are various luxury accommodations that can be coordinated into a custom safari package. Most accommodations are already pre-planned and included with your safari depending on location and options, however, we offer the opportunity to completely customize your safari based on your desired experience and budget.
Overall, we want you to have the exact accommodations and amenities to make your safari experience as comfortable as possible. Our staff can help guide you on all local options so that you can create the safari of your dreams!
Adapting to African culture
It’s an important reminder to respect people and cultures that may hold different values and beliefs than what you’re accustomed to in your home country. When it comes to interacting with others in Tanzania, keep in mind that patience and understanding are essential when adapting and communicating— be sure not to judge others too quickly or harshly. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to Africa or any travel experience, so be sure to do your research before traveling to ensure you know how best to interact with locals.
The best advice when traveling to Africa, or anywhere outside of your home country, is to remain polite, respectful, and appreciative of what each unique country has to offer.
