We will reach the distinct pinnacle of the Lava Tower (4640 m), our high point for the day and a great place to enjoy lunch. In the afternoon, we make a steep descent to our camp for the night, located in the base of the Great Barranco Valley (3960 m), sheltered by towering cliffs with extensive views of the plains below.

We climb over rock, which is not too technical but can be long and tiring. Passing underneath the Heim and Kersten Glaciers, we head to Karanga Valley. From here, we face a steep climb from Karanga Valley to Karanga Camp, set at 3963m. For those feeling strong enough, we can take a mid-afternoon acclimatization trek up to 4200m before descending back to camp for the night.

This is a tough, steep walk made a bit more difficult by the altitude. On arriving at camp, we enjoy lunch and spend the afternoon resting as we prepare for a long night and day ahead. It is important during this time to stay hydrated and keep warm. We will enjoy an early dinner and rest as we will be rising between 11pm-12am to start the climb to the summit.

The views in this area are absolutely spectacular. We aim to be on the crater rim at Stella Point (5739m) as the first rays of the sun hit us. We will be surrounded by beautiful ice cliffs within the crater and magnificent views of the jagged Mawenzi Peak and beyond. Another hour of walking and we will arrive at the summit of Uhuru Peak (5895m).

We begin our descent by returning to Stella Point and descending on scree slope and back to Barafu Camp for breakfast, before finally heading down to Millennium Camp for well-earned rest.

Overnight at the same choice of accommodation.
